Praia do Areal de Santa Bárbara is known for its surf-friendly environment, making it a haven for surf enthusiasts. The beach attracts those seeking the thrill of riding the waves, creating an energetic and vibrant atmosphere.
Although I didn’t surf during my visit, the beach’s reputation for thrilling waves made it a tempting prospect. Instead, I found joy in watching skilled surfers ride the waves for hours, even during the offseason.
Lifeguards on duty – even in the off season
There are a lot of beaches in the Azores where you will be completely on your own. No facilities or amenities and definitely no life guards. This is not the case at Praia do Areal de Santa Bárbara. I went twice during the off season (February) and there were multiple lifeguards on duty both times.

During a few visits on my trip, this hidden paradise only had a few other beachgoers, truly encapsulating the essence of an exclusive retreat. This rare tranquility allows visitors to connect with nature and enjoy a peaceful escape from the demands of everyday life.
