Are you unsure of what to do about transportation while on vacation? Did your car break down and you are unsure what to do to get around while it gets fixed? Rental cars in these situations can be extremely expensive. While public transportation options are really good in some places, they are really terrible in a lot of other places. Uber and Lyft can help a little bit, but using those for all of your transportation options gets really expensive.

How to Rent a Car with Turo

The newest option that I’ve found and highly recommend is Turo. For those that haven’t heard of it, it is basically Airbnb but with cars. A car owner list their own vehicle for rent, setting their price and days it is available. All you have to do is go on Turo’s website/app to search availability. There are a few apps like Turo (GetAround and ZipCar kind of), but with the Turo discount and selection of cars, they are the best.

Last weekend we went to Boston/New Hampshire/Vermont to check out the fall leaves. After booking our flights to the Boston airport we encountered a problem; there literally wasn’t a single rental car available for rent.

The combination of peak fall season and MLB playoffs caused every other traditional rental car to be booked. I began to panic since public transportation was not an option with the ground we wanted to cover. Thankfully, a friend recommended Turo; not only were there plenty of cars available, but I guarantee if traditional rental cars would have become available, they would have been way more expensive (there were options for cars as cheap as $20 a day).

We made a reservation and messaged the owner with our flight arrival information so he could meet us at the airport, though you can set pickup and drop off wherever you want. The pickup process was easy; we walked off the plane and were greeted by the car owner at passenger pickup.  After checking IDs and snapping a couple quick “before pictures” of the car we were off.  The process was much quicker than the traditional check-out line at the airport rental car center.

How old do you have to be to use Turo?

You can book a car if you are 18 or older.

Turo Insurance Cost

Concerned about what would happen if the car breaks down or if you get into an accident? Turo car insurance already thought of that and has an additional insurance policy to cover the vehicle while you’ve rented it.

The Turo insurance cost is already included; the car we rented was covered until a Liberty Mutual policy. Thankfully we didn’t need it, but if you do you can use the Turo phone number 1-866-817-8097 to get things figured solved.

Choose the exact car you want

Another great benefit is that you can choose the exact type of car you want to rent.  Do you want something super small that is good on gas? Want to try driving a Tesla or a Porsche? Need something 4wd?  All of those options were available, though we went with an option that was near the cheapest.

Returning the car was just as easy; we told the car owner when our return flight was, and he met us at the airport to quickly return keys.

Turo Fees

Overall the Turo fees aren’t bad. One thing that is a little bit different than a traditional rental car is that you are supposed to return the car cleaned, though lots of car owners will let you forego that option for an additional charge.

One other thing worth mentioning is that if you don’t drive your car every day and are looking to make a few extra bucks, you can list your car on Turo for people to drive. Depending what kind of car it is, and how often your vehicle is available, you can do pretty well.  I haven’t listed a vehicle for rent yet, but am definitely considering it.
